Sometimes a story comes along that stops you in your tracks.
Over the last day, local social media has been filled with reports of a dog that sadly lost its life after reportedly being left inside a vehicle here on the Isle of Sheppey.
Reading the comments was heartbreaking. People described trying desperately to help, with one witness saying they did everything they could but it was already too late.
Whether you knew the dog or not, it's impossible not to feel saddened by a tragedy like this.
It Can Happen Faster Than Most People Realise
Many people still believe that cracking a window open or only leaving a dog for "a few minutes" makes it safe.
Sadly, it doesn't.
On a warm day, the temperature inside a parked car can rise incredibly quickly. Even when it doesn't feel particularly hot outside, the inside of a vehicle can become dangerously hot in a matter of minutes.
Dogs don't sweat like we do. They mainly cool themselves by panting, which becomes far less effective once the surrounding air is too hot.
Heatstroke can develop rapidly and can be fatal.
Signs of Heatstroke
If you think a dog may be suffering from heatstroke, watch for signs including:
- Excessive panting
- Drooling
- Bright red or very pale gums
- Weakness or collapse
- Vomiting or diarrhoea
- Confusion or inability to stand
- Loss of consciousness
- Heatstroke is a veterinary emergency.
What Should You Do?
If you see a dog alone in a parked car:
- Try to locate the owner immediately.
- Call 999 if the dog appears to be in immediate danger and ask for police assistance.
- Contact the RSPCA or local authorities where appropriate.
- Stay with the vehicle if it's safe to do so.
If a dog is showing obvious signs of severe distress and every second counts, the law may provide a defence for taking reasonable action to prevent greater harm, but damaging someone else's property is a serious decision. If possible, speak to the police first and only act if you genuinely believe there is no other option to prevent the animal from suffering or dying.
